29 June 2013: Mothing Morning

Leader: Tony Rayner

Just 6 members attended the mothing morning held at Red Cow Cottage, Cholsey on Saturday June 29th. A pity so few members came for the moths certainly turned out. Over 50 macro species were identified by Richard Lewington and Tony Rayner. These included at least 31 hawkmoths of 5 species Privet Hawk, Eyed Hawk, Poplar Hawk, Elephant Hawk and Small Elephant Hawk. This was only exceeded by the 48 Hawkmoths recorded the following day!

Watch Jo Cartmel's video of  some of the Hawkmoths.

A full species list is being compiled. The group also saw an early Marbled White which remains a candidate for the year's first record for the 3 counties. Later in the afternoon an amazing 13 Small Tortoiseshells were found on this Cholsey site.
